But the following TV setting tips from Consumer Reports will let you get the best picture quality on your own. So if green turf on the screen starts looking more like an ocean of blue, you can just bring the set back to its default settings.
Our exclusive Screen Optimizer provides the best settings for thousands of TV models. These are the settings we arrived at after calibrating each TV in our labs to get it looking its best. It could artificially boost brightness, contrast, and colors, and turn on motion smoothing more on that below.
Whether that happens or not, your next steps remain the same. Ideally, a TV should be able to display deep blacks without losing the near-black detail within the darkest areas. To adjust this, freeze-frame a nighttime scene, such as one from a Batman movie or just about any vampire movie.
Then turn it back down so the black gets as black as possible without obscuring those details. Find an image with lots of white—say, a wedding gown, or a sky full of puffy white clouds.
Lower the contrast control until you can see all the detail, such as the shadows in the folds of the gown, or the subtle gray shadings in the clouds.

Then raise it to get the brightest picture possible without washing out those details. Start with color temperature, which is sometimes called color tone. All these settings may interact with one another in odd ways, so repeat the process as necessary. Manufacturers often set the sharpness control rather high and turn on noise-reduction and other image-enhancement modes. But the best TVs need little or no added enhancement to display HD images at their highest resolution.
You can tell if the sharpness control is set too high because the background will start to look grainy, and halos will appear around the edges of objects, making the overall image appear less natural. We suggest you turn the sharpness control down to zero, then add sharpness sparingly only if the image looks soft, with poorly defined edges.
Many 4K TVs now have high dynamic range HDR capabilitywhich means they can display a wider range from black to white, so you can see more details in the very darkest and brightest areas of the picture. For instance, sometimes one object in a movie scene is supposed to hit a brightness level higher than many TV screens can produce.

This setting usually has the biggest impact on picture quality. Each picture mode has different default settings, and some of them behave differently from one another, even if you try and match the settings across modes. The higher the setting, the brighter the picture will be. There is no right answer for this setting. Each user needs to adjust this setting to their specific viewing conditions. If you're in a bright room, for example, the TV has to be set to a brighter setting than if it was placed in a completely dark room.
It also depends on personal preferences, as some people prefer a brighter or darker image. Adjusting the backlight setting doesn't have a significant impact on overall picture quality. It tends to brighten everything pretty much equally, so although blacks tend to let a bit more light through, whites are brighter as well, so the contrast ratio actually remains about the same.
Like the backlight setting above, you should adjust this to your viewing conditions. Almost all TVs have this set correctly by default, so we recommend leaving it alone.
If you want to try adjusting it using the pattern above, set the brightness to the minimum value and then increase it until you see the black portion on the left begins to lighten. The contrast setting adjusts the amount of detail present in bright images.
This setting should be pretty close to correct by default, but sometimes needs a bit of tweaking. Just lower the contrast setting on your TV to the minimum, and then increase until only lines appear. As you can see from the above images, there's little difference between the correct setting and the maximum.
The proper sharpness setting will make things look about the same as they do in real life. Too much will exaggerate contours and lines.
It's very rare for a TV to have the option to remove sharpness from an image, which is why only two images are compared here. To adjust this setting with the pattern, increase Sharpness to as high as it goes, and then decrease until the lines look normal and any geometric patterns in the lines usually diamond-shaped go away. Too little saturation will wash out the color of the image extreme example at the above-leftand too much will oversaturate the picture above-right.
This setting adjusts the amount of red and green tint to the image on the TV. Once again, if you decide to adjust this setting yourself, use a blue filter. Adjusting the white balance means changing the amount of red, blue, and green in several different shades of gray.
By correcting each of these shades, the overall color of the image is corrected to be as accurate as the TV can manage. This can't be adjusted without specialized equipment, so we don't recommend trying to adjust this by eye.
It also varies between units, even of the same model and size, so we don't recommend copying someone else's settings, including the values we provide on each review settings page. Warmer color temperatures will make the picture look yellower, and cooler temperatures look bluer. This setting determines the amount of detail in blacks and shadows, with 'Full' offering a bit more detail. It doesn't really matter which setting you choose, as long as both devices are set to the same thing.

It doesn't actually increase the absolute contrast of the picture pure blacks and pure whites stay the same. Local dimming adjusts the backlight in dark areas of the screen, to reduce the amount of backlight bleed and improve the contrast ratio. Not all TVs support this feature, and relatively few TVs do it well.However, once a CRT based display has been given proper care their picture will surpass that rendered by any of the more modern display technologies. To calibrate a CRT usually requires between six to twelve hours.
I work hard on these sets because I feel that the investment in time and labor really pays off. Once you see your CRT after it has been calibrated you will probably wonder how you could have ever looked at the picture the way it was before. The improvement is most dramatic. First and foremost, I inspect the TV for any defects that may impact the quality of the calibration. If I find any problems I will point them out. One may also think that their new TV came from the factory with clean optics.
Unfortunately, this is never the case. I have seen many cases where rear projectors have large spider webs in the cabinet passing right across the screen.
How to calibrate your TV to get the best picture possible
When I clean the optics I completely disassemble the lens stacks and remove the lenses from the set. I remove the dead bugs, debris, and clean the dust from the lenses. I also clean the mirror and inner screen. This setting involves adjusting variable resistors that are often located behind the front panel.
Most importantly, properly adjusted cut-off voltage will extend CRT life. Mechanical, Electrical and Magnetic Focus CRT displays usually have a few different types of focus adjustments that should be made.
The most common three on CRT displays include mechanical, electrostatic, and magnetic focusing. Mechanical is the actual focusing of the lenses. Adjustments to mechanical focus are made in the same way as you would adjust binoculars or a telescope; the lenses are rotated until proper focus is realized.
Electrostatic focus involves adjustment of a variable resistor to really fine tune focus. Changes to magnetic focus can have a most profound impact on the image. All three types of focus will be typically out of alignment right from the factory. Obviously making focus adjustments will improve the sharpness and detail of the picture. On a CRT projector I usually spend between four to seven hours correcting and calibrating geometry.
I make all geometry adjustments in the service menu so they will become the new factory defaults. This factory overscan will also not be equal on all sides or the screen.The color could use some tweaking, too. And just maybe if you…. Before we get to the nitty-gritty, the vast majority of TVs exit the factory adjusted pretty darn well. The first step in your calibration process is to make sure your TV is set for in-home use and not store demonstration mode.
The technology you bought is the technology you bought, and no amount of twiddling will change that. HDR10 adjusts the TV only once, at the beginning, and must consider the entirety of the movie when doing so. Some will even lock you out of basic brightness and color adjustments while HDR is in play. But if you feel the need, by all means give it a go. Here are the first steps. Backlight: Now this is a brightness control, but it only applies to LCD TVs or other types that use a separate source for luminance. Increasing the strength or luminance of a backlight will result in a brighter picture, but it will also increase bleed around the edges of a TV as well as from the LCDs themselves which are not perfect shutters and the area surrounding them.
On some TVs, you can wash out color almost entirely by increasing the intensity of the backlight. Generally speaking, leave the backlight as low as possible for the ambient light conditions while still maintaining suitable bright highlights bright. So, brightness equals black level, and contrast equals white level. The difference between the two is your actual contrast level.
How much it will help will depend on your TV. Color: This TV term actually sits closer to its mundane meaning, but refers to the intensity of color, or in industry-speak—saturation. Turn this setting up too high, and the colors overwhelm the details. Set it too low, and voila! Saturation settings are easily done by eyeball. When you notice detail declining, you have just more than enough color.
